The source of this woodcut map is unknown, and the author argues here that it was based on an indigenous map of the city. At the center of the city is the temple precinct of Tenochtitlan, and at its center are the twin temples that were dedicated to the pre-Hispanic deities Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli Over time the three were able to overpower all other societies in the Valley of Mexico.
